At the end of September 2025, the EU reached a preliminary political agreement to update the list of priority substances in surface and groundwater. New pesticides, pharmaceuticals, bisphenols and PFAS will be introduced, while substances that are no longer relevant will be removed.

A particularly notable change is that trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) will be included in the previously proposed total of 24 PFAS substances for surface water. The short PFAS molecule TFA has attracted attention from both authorities and the media, as it is a breakdown product of several PFAS substances, freons and pesticides.

The agreement also includes new routines for monitoring and reporting with a focus on both chemical and biological analyses.
