The Kalixlöjrom caviar is a popular choice on New Year’s Eve in Sweden, but did you know it is the first Swedish product that has been awarded protected designation of origin status by the EU? This puts the product in the same exclusive class as for example champagne and the Italian Parma ham.

The origin is what makes the Kalixlöjrom caviar unique. A big outflow of freshwater from the rivers of Northern Sweden, from Haparanda to Piteå, creates a unique environment for the fishes and gives the bleak roe caviar a deep-golden red color, which is characteristic for the Kalixlöjrom. The mix of fresh- and brackish water in combination with the composition of local bedrocks is also what makes it possible to determine the product origin using analyses of trace elements and isotope ratios.

The ALS laboratory in Luleå offers both analyses of isotope ratios and trace element, both of which can be used for authentication of for example food products.
