Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal that when exposed symptoms such as headache, irritation and vomits can occur. In a longer perspective it gives reduced memory function, longer reaction time and damages to the nervous system and reproduction ability.

Paint fabricated before 1970 can contain lead (Pb), either as color pigment or as decay protection.

The problem with lead (Pb) is when the paint is burned or polished away. Small particles are then coming into existence that one can breathe in and get transferred to the bloodstream. There is also a risk one can inhale the particles through dirt from the clothes as well as through food.

In order to find out if a paint contains lead (Pb), one can analyze color flakes from the painted surface. If the lead content in the paint is over 1 percentage by weight, one have to follow the rule written by Swedish Work Environment Administration and take action with its changes about lead (Pb) 1992:17.

Before the work starts a doctor’s investigation must be done where the lead content in blood is controlled and shall be under observation during the whole work.

This content shall not exceed 1.0 µmol per liter for men and women over 50 years old or 0.8 µmol per liter for women under 50 years old. Air shall be controlled as well.

ALS Scandinavia analyses color flakes as well as blood:

  • Lead (Pb) in color, 600 SEK per test
  • Lead (Pb) in blood, 400 SEK per test
