Cleaning of sample containers

125 ml bottles for water samples (LD-polyethene)
Only new bottles are used. The cleaning procedure comprises
- Leaching in hot hydrochloric acid:water 1:1 and rinsing with de-ionized water
- Leaching in dilute nitric acid and rinsing with "Milli-Q" water

The purity of the bottles from each cleaning batch is controlled by filling bottles with high-purity 1% nitric acid (a matrix similar to an acidified water sample) and leaving them to stand at least 24h before analyzing the contents by ICP-SFMS screening. The concentrations of the elements in package V-2, including its supplementary elements, must then lie below reporting limits (below 1µgl-1 for Al och Fe) for the bottles to be approved for delivery. The cleaning procedure is based on the Swedish standard method SS 02 81 94 (Sampling of natural waters for determination of trace metals).

10 ml tubes for blood and serum (polystyrene; polyethene stoppers)
Only new tubes are used. The cleaning procedure comprises
- Leaching in 10% nitric acid and rinsing with "Milli-Q" water
- Leaching in 5% nitric acid ("Suprapur") in a clean room
